James Fyfe bid farewell to his security screening position in Massachusetts, setting his sights on a career in law enforcement.

Intrigued by New Orleans, Fyfe was drawn in by the city’s active recruitment campaign, which included ‘help wanted’ posters due to a staffing shortage. He started his path as a patrol officer in Algiers, steadily advancing to the Fourth District Task Force and focusing on property crimes.

Fyfe’s persistence and dedication led him to a spot on the Violent Crime Abatement Investigation team. Eventually, he achieved his goal of joining the homicide division, just as New Orleans was grappling with a surge in violent crime. Unlike many detectives who manage around five homicide cases annually, Fyfe found himself handling nearly 40 cases over a span of three years, thanks to his remarkable ability to solve them.

Since 2022, Fyfe has impressively closed 24 consecutive cases, earning admiration from his colleagues who track his successes on a whiteboard affectionately named the “Fyfe-o-meter.”

His exceptional investigative skills have significantly contributed to raising the homicide division’s clearance rate from 40% in 2022 to over 76%.

As 2024 nears the end, Thanh Vu tends her supermarket, but three “customers” are seeking more than groceries. Thanh, 61, was held at gunpoint while thieves emptied the register and pocketed cigarettes.

When Thanh fights back, she’s shot and left for dead.
