Erin Strotman, a former NICU nurse who faced 20 charges, has reached a plea agreement after admitting no contest to nine charges of child abuse. Strotman, 27, was initially implicated in a case that emerged from disturbing incidents at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital.

The investigation began when Detective Megan Lynch from the Henrico County Police Department was called to examine a 5-month-old infant in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The baby boy was discovered with a fractured left femur, raising immediate concerns.

Further medical examinations uncovered additional injuries, including a fractured right tibia and multiple rib fractures. These findings alarmingly mirrored injuries previously sustained by four other male infants in the NICU during the past summer, prompting deeper scrutiny.

In response to the earlier incidents, the hospital had installed surveillance cameras throughout the NICU to enhance monitoring. Detective Lynch meticulously reviewed the footage, which provided crucial evidence.

On November 10, the surveillance captured Erin Strotman in the NICU room with the infant, referred to in records as “Y.H.” The video revealed Strotman handling the baby in a distressing manner, gripping his legs, applying pressure, and forcefully bending them backward until the baby’s feet touched his head. The distress in Y.H.’s cries was evident in the footage, further corroborating the abuse claims.

Seven potential abuse cases are now under investigation, and police say more may be uncovered. Henrico County investigators are reviewing hundreds of hours of surveillance footage to piece together the events.

Reports indicate that at least three affected families attended Strotman’s court appearance. One father, speaking publicly, stated that another couple reported their child had suffered 12 fractures.

Strotman has been formally charged in one baby’s case, with the investigation ongoing. Her public defender stated that she has not yet entered a plea.

Strotman remains in custody without bail, and her next court appearance is set for March 24.
