Inconsistent Statements Cloud Search for California Baby Emmanuel Haro, Foul Play Not Ruled Out

Authorities in California have seized a vehicle belonging to the father of a 7-month-old baby boy whose mother claimed was kidnapped when she was knocked unconscious in a parking lot.

Jake Haro’s attorney claimed on NewsNation’s “Banfield” that the father is cooperating in the investigation. The same attorney earlier told another outlet that “nobody is searching for” Emmanuel Haro.

“Find Emmanuel, that’s all the family is asking for,” said Vincent Hughes, a defense attorney who represented Jake Haro in a previous case, told KCBS. “Nobody is searching for a seven-month-old child, and that’s the biggest issue here.”

Rebecca Haro reported her son missing last Thursday, saying the family had been at a nearby park for an older child’s football practice. She said she took the baby to a sporting goods store to buy a mouthguard for the practicing child. When she got to the parking lot, she said, she stopped to change the baby’s diaper, but someone she did not see knocked her out and took the baby, leaving her with a black eye.

Authorities launched an all out search for the boy and the supposed suspect, but quickly became suspicious of Haro’s story, and by Saturday. investigators said the mother “declined to continue with the interview” when they addressed “inconsistencies in her initial statement.”

While it’s not clear what those “inconsistencies,” media outlets have reported the possibility that the mother was seen with a black eye well before the supposed kidnapping, and the baby may not have been seen at the park with the rest of the family.

Despite Hughes’ statement that “nobody is searching for” the missing boy, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department says that it has “conducted extensive searches in Yucaipa and Cabazon, looking for Emmanuel and any evidence that might lead to his location and circumstances surrounding his disappearance.”

Hughes, who represented Jake Haro in his 2021 conviction for a child cruelty incident that took place in 2018, said that the Haros have been cooperative with investigators and that the father’s previous conviction should not be taken into account in this case.

He stressed on “Banfield” that he represents Jake Haro and not Rebecca Haro, saying that the husband had handed over his electronic devices and passwords and is cooperating with authorities.

Hughes confirmed that authorities had seized the family vehicle.

Meanwhile, the national Uvalde Foundation for Kids, which had withdrawn from the search for Emmanuel and dropped its offer of a reward after the parents stopped talking with police, said Monday it was prepared to return to the search after Hughes told them the parents dropped out of search efforts because of unspecified “threats.”

“Join our search and you will be protected,” the foundation said, according to Victor Valley News. “A community seeks answers. You say that you do. Prove it, and our foundation and most assuredly a community will follow. If you have nothing to hide step forward and you will find you have more support than you could ever imagine. Finding Emmanuel should supersede everything else.”

The foundation said it would send volunteer teams to the Haro home if they decide to reengage with the search.

The sheriff’s department asks anyone with information to contact theits Specialized Investigations Division at 909-890-4904.
