In the whirlwind month since the tragic death of Mississippi college student Nolan Wells, this perplexing case has revealed one startling development after another, capturing public attention.
When the body of the 18-year-old was discovered along the serene shores of Horn Island shortly after a Fourth of July celebration, investigators initially found no evidence of foul play. However, Nolan’s grieving family remains relentless in their quest for clarity, citing inconsistencies in his final known activities that continue to stir their suspicions.
The mystery has only fueled rampant speculation and increased public intrigue. Following Nolan’s untimely passing, witnesses have come forward with accounts of receiving ominous threats; arrests have been made concerning those threats. Moreover, Nolan’s mother found herself unexpectedly embroiled in a brief and related investigation into her nursing license.

What Happened to Nolan Wells?
Nolan vanished on the Fourth of July after joining friends for a gathering on Mississippi’s Horn Island, a remote and favored destination for celebratory escapades. The island’s desolate allure stands in stark contrast to the mystery surrounding Nolan’s last night.
Ashlee Cole, a judge and mom to Nolan’s friend Warren Hudson, said that her son last saw Nolan around 3 p.m. before the rest of the group decided to head back home after noticing a problem with their boat.
“The boat was taking on water and they had an issue with the bilge pump,” Cole wrote in a July 7 post on Facebook. “Nolan made a decision to stay on the island and return inland later with another group of friends.”
Nolan’s family reported him missing around 11 p.m. that night after receiving a call from one of his concerned friends, according to CNN.
Where Was Nolan Wells’ Body Found?
Nolan’s body was found two days later on the northwest shore of Horn Island. A July 6 statement from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said that “no foul play was suspected,” CNN reported.
United Cajun Navy President Todd Terrell—who piloted a seaplane in the search for the college student—described the island as a “dangerous area” due to its unique conditions.
“It was not uncommon for the body to have washed up right there,” Terrell told Crime Stories with Nancy Grace. “That area is full of rip currents, really strong right there. [It] goes from two to three foot to 20 feet, pretty much within a couple steps.”
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office noted in a July 8 update that they were working to “establish the facts through eyewitness accounts, physical evidence, and other reliable information” and asked anyone who may have seen Nolan or captured images of him that day to come forward.
“This remains an active and ongoing investigation,” they said. “We appreciate the community’s continued cooperation and ask everyone to refrain from spreading unverified information that could hinder investigative efforts.”
Oxygen reached out to Sheriff John Ledbetter for additional comment, but did not receive a reply.
Nolan Wells Cause of Death “Undetermined”
Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd told CNN that there were no immediate signs of injury on Nolan’s body. He requested that the autopsy be conducted by the state medical examiner’s office, who has yet to release their findings.
However, Nolan’s family commissioned their own independent autopsy by forensic pathologist Dr. Robert Mitchell.
The family’s attorney Ben Crump—who is conducting an independent review of the case— announced July 22 that the cause and manner of death in that autopsy had been listed as “undetermined,” noting that it didn’t appear that Nolan had suffered any fractures or deep tissue injuries, per The Associated Press.
Mitchell noted in the preliminary results of the autopsy that he was not able to rule out whether “non-accidental factors contributed to or caused the death.”
Oxygen reached out to the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, where the state medical examiner’s office is housed, however, they declined to comment citing department policy. Lynd also did not return a request for comment.
Why Do Nolan Wells’ Parents Have Concerns About His Death?
Since his death, Nolan’s parents have been vocal about their concerns surrounding his death. His mom Christine Wonsley has questioned why Nolan would have left his cell phone behind on the boat—especially if his friends were leaving the island.
“I know my child well,” she told CNN. “If he has a phone out all the time at home, he’s definitely going to have a phone out whenever he’s out and he’s doing things with his friends.”
She questioned law enforcement’s statement that there were no signs of foul play, expressing concerns that they had rushed to judgement, according to the outlet.
His family also doesn’t understand why Nolan would have chosen to stay behind that day.
As his father Elmore Wonsley said, “We always taught him, ‘If you go with a group, you stay with the group.’”
What Have Nolan Wells’ Friends Said About the Day He Disappeared?
Nolan’s friend Tracestin Shepherd told ABC News that Nolan wanted to stay on the island because he met a girl. He said Nolan and the rest of their friends kept their phones on the boat because they were in salt water and didn’t want to ruin their devices.
Tracestin—who is biracial—denied doing anything to harm Nolan and disputed an assertion made by Crump that race could have played a factor in what happened that day.
“Nobody would ever hurt Nolan in our friend group. We would die for him,” he told the outlet. “We would do everything in our power for that guy. If he needed anything, we would do it.”
Tracestin has also insisted that he was the person heard yelling in a video, obtained by ABC News, showing some of the boats and people on the island that afternoon that was widely circulated on social media. Nolan’s parents have suggested that their son may have been heard yelling in the video as part of a possible argument.
Warren Hudson also described the public speculation as “hurtful.”
“It’s a sick world we’re living in,” he told The New York Post. “It’s terrible. Nolan was my best friend.”
Nolan Wells’ Witnesses Report Receiving Death Threats, Three Arrests Made
In the wake of Nolan’s death, those connected to the case, including his family, have reported receiving death threats, leading to three separate arrests.
Federal authorities announced the July 30 arrest of Joseph Alfredo Vasquez Dumarce of Sacramento after he allegedly sent Ashlee, a Chancery Court Judge, and her family bomb and death threats through Facebook, according to Mississippi Today.
He allegedly told the judge in one message that a bomb would be sent to her office that would “blow you away when you see it,” according to a complaint obtained by the outlet.
Joseph—a registered sex offender in California—is now facing a charge of interstate transmission of threatening communication.
The same day Joseph was arrested, Michelle Francine Edwards was arrested in Ohio for allegedly making dozens of bomb threats to the George County Chancery Clerk’s Office and Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, according to a complaint reviewed by WLOX.
In repeated calls to the clerk’s office, she allegedly made comments like “the clock is ticking” and “die,” authorities said.
Michelle is charged with one count of transmitting a threatening communication in interstate commerce.
A third person, Edward James Porter of Illinois, is also facing federal charges of transmitting a threatening communication in interstate commerce after allegedly threatening to kill or injure two witnesses, according to a complaint obtained by The Sun Herald.
In his case, federal prosecutors said he threatened to come kill one of Nolan’s friends and his family. He allegedly sent a text message with the witness’ home address, proving he knew where he lived, according to a complaint obtained by the outlet.
He’s also accused of calling a second witness and threatening to kill them, cut up the body and put it into a suitcase, prosecutors said.
Its not clear whether any of the accused have obtained attorneys to speak on their behalf.
Why Was Nolan Wells Mom Accused of Misconduct?
Along with the arrests, Nolan’s mother—who works as a nurse—found herself the subject of a misconduct investigation after a professional complaint was lodged against her by an anonymous source, according to WANE.
According to Crump, the complaint, which he called “frivolous” and “unfounded” was later closed by the Mississippi Board of Nursing.
“It was an attempt to distract a grieving mother and intimidate her into silence, filed by someone who would not put their name on it,” Crump said, according to the outlet. “That effort failed.”
The Mississippi Board of Nursing declined to provide any details of the complaint in a statement to Oxygen.
“All investigations are confidential and not subject to subpoena or record request,” the organization said Aug. 6. “The Board is legislatively charged with protecting the public and is complaint driven. As such, the Board is required by law to investigate any and all complaints filed with the Board.”
Where Does the Nolan Wells Investigation Stand Today?
Now, more than a month after Nolan disappeared, questions still remain about what happened that day.
The investigation by the sheriff’s office remains ongoing and Nolan’s official autopsy report by the state has yet to be released.
“We just want to know what happened,” Christine said in a July 11 press conference, per The Associated Press, “and why our baby didn’t come home.”
Crump has pledged that he and the family will not rest until they get answers.
“We are completely focused, completely laser focused on getting to the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” Crump said at a July 30 press conference, according to the AP. “The threats, the texts mean nothing to us, we will not be deterred.”
