A police captain from Nebraska finds herself in an unusual and alarming predicament. Captain Mayde McGuire of the Lincoln Police Department is facing child abuse allegations after a troubling incident involving her toddler.
The 54-year-old officer, along with her partner Mary Tobiassen, aged 49, was cited for child abuse following an incident at Pawnee Lake in Lincoln. On what seemed to be a routine Sunday afternoon of fishing, an unsuspecting couple made a shocking discovery. As they strolled past a black minivan in the parking lot, they were drawn to the cries of a small child inside. Alarmed to find the 2-year-old girl locked in the vehicle and alone, they promptly dialed 911. According to authorities, the couple later identified the vehicle’s owners as McGuire and Tobiassen.
In a news briefing held on Monday, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department confirmed McGuire’s status as a high-ranking officer. It was emphasized that she was not on duty when the event unfolded at the scenic lake.

Fortunately, the young child was unharmed and was soon reunited with her parents. However, the situation escalated as McGuire was subjected to a preliminary breathalyzer test on-site, revealing a blood alcohol content of 0.108. Her conduct and the potential repercussions cast a spotlight on this incident, adding a layer of complexity to the circumstances surrounding the child abuse citation.
McGuire was placed on leave during the investigation into the charges against her. Both she and Tobiassen were cited for misdemeanor child abuse. Neither of them was arrested. Court dates for McGuire and Tobiassen were not available.
