In a troubling event at Rockaway Beach, Oregon, a man was stabbed by a passenger in a car after the vehicle hit his pregnant wife in a parking lot on Sunday.
The woman, who was holding her 2-year-old son at the time, was struck by the vehicle, which then halted, according to a statement from the Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office. The woman’s husband approached the driver to confront them about the incident, during which a passenger exited the vehicle, stabbed the man in the back, and returned to the car.
The driver then left the scene but later stopped a short distance away, walking back to cooperate with authorities.
Authorities soon discovered that the passenger had fled on foot and attempted to evade capture by changing clothes. Despite his efforts, he was quickly apprehended and taken into custody.
The Sheriff’s Office has charged the 25-year-old suspect with several offenses, including assault, menacing, unlawful use of a weapon, and disorderly conduct. KPTV reports that the suspect has been identified as Isak Hunter Rutledge, a natural-born American citizen.
The station also said that the driver is not currently facing charges.
The sheriff’s office said that the woman and her toddler son were injured but were expected to be ok. The husband was taken to a hospital for treatment of his stab wound and is also expected to recover.
“This incident escalated quickly and had the potential to result in far more serious injuries,” said Sheriff Josh Brown. “I am proud of the swift response by our deputies and thankful for the assistance from the citizens who were present and helped provide information during the incident.”
