Pair Arrested After Police Discover Stolen Gun in Their Vehicle

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Torey Jeremiah Cobb, 24, and Joshua Williams Singleton, 25, were taken into custody late last night after Gainesville police reportedly discovered a stolen firearm inside their vehicle during a traffic stop.

According to police, the stop occurred around 9:55 p.m. on October 10 after an officer noticed the vehicle, driven by Cobb, had inoperable tag lights. Cobb reportedly told the officer he did not have identification but said the vehicle was registered in his name. A records check using his name and date of birth showed that his driver’s license had been suspended since March. Police said Cobb acknowledged he was aware of the suspension because his license had been checked during an earlier traffic stop.

Cobb was arrested on suspicion of knowingly driving with a suspended license. The officer also reported smelling burnt marijuana coming from Cobb. Both Cobb and Singleton allegedly said they did not possess medical marijuana cards. After Singleton exited the vehicle, he reportedly produced a bag containing approximately 8.4 grams of marijuana and said it belonged to him.

Police said an American Tactical pistol was visible on the driver’s-side floorboard. A subsequent search reportedly uncovered a CZ Scorpion pistol beneath a tarp behind the driver’s seat. After checking the firearms’ serial numbers, the officer learned that the CZ Scorpion had allegedly been reported stolen from a Gainesville vehicle in April 2025.

After being read his Miranda rights, Cobb reportedly denied knowing the stolen firearm was inside the vehicle and said he did not know how it got there. He later told investigators that the gun did not belong to him.

Singleton also reportedly denied ownership of the stolen firearm after receiving his Miranda warning.

Cobb faces charges of grand theft of a firearm and driving with a suspended license. Authorities said he has no local criminal history. Judge James Colaw set his bail at $2,000.

Singleton was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, grand theft of a firearm, and possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana. His record includes juvenile convictions from 2017 and 2018, four adult nonviolent felony convictions, and two adult misdemeanor convictions, one involving violence. Judge Colaw set Singleton’s bail at $76,000.
