Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Christian Alvin Perry, 25, and Mario Fidel Taylor, 25, have been arrested and charged with attempted homicide, aggravated battery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and firing a weapon on residential property for allegedly shooting a man and threatening to shoot a juvenile in Majestic Oaks on August 6, 2022.

At about 6:51 p.m. on August 6, 2022, Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of multiple gunshots fired in the area of 5800 SW 20th Avenue, in Majestic Oaks.

A short time later, two people arrived at Alachua County Fire Rescue Station 80, and one of them was a man who had been shot in the leg. The second person, a juvenile, reported that the gunman had also threatened him.

Deputies located surveillance video that reportedly showed two subjects in Woodland Villas Apartments before the shooting, later identified as Perry and Taylor; two men dressed in the same clothes were also seen in Majestic Oaks video surveillance with shirts over their faces, and Perry was identified as the shooter. After the shooting, both subjects reportedly fled back to Woodland Villas.

Further investigation found that Perry was upset with the victim over a romantic rivalry.

Formal charges have been filed against Perry for attempted homicide, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and firing a weapon on residential property. Although Perry is a convicted felon, a formal charge was not filed for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, which was originally listed on the sworn complaint.

Perry has three felony convictions (none violent) and one misdemeanor conviction (none violent); he has served one state prison sentence and was released in January 2022. Judge James Colaw set bail at $2,850,000 in Perry’s arrest warrant; Perry was arrested this morning.

Formal charges have been filed against Taylor for attempted homicide, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and firing a weapon on residential property. Taylor has one felony conviction (one violent) and five misdemeanor convictions (two violent). He was arrested on January 18 when two firearms were found during a traffic stop for driving a vehicle without a license plate. He has been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in that case, and Judge Thomas Jaworski added $250,000 bail in that case to the $2,850,000 bail recommended by Judge Colaw in Taylor’s arrest warrant.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
