Couple allegedly allowed children to become malnourished

A Florida husband and wife were recently arrested after their children were found “severely malnourished,” Sunshine State police say.

Charmy Milfort, 34, and Gabrielle Milfort, 32, stand accused of one count each of child neglect without great bodily harm, according to Miami-Dade County court records.

The couple were arrested on Wednesday, according to the North Miami Police Department, but the charges are reportedly a long time coming.

The criminal investigation into the goings-on at the Milfort residence date back to at least June 24, according to law enforcement. On that day, the Florida Department of Children and Families took custody of the couple”s 4-year-old and 7-year-old boys.

What law enforcement allegedly learned after that proved shocking.

The older boy was never enrolled in school, while his younger brother weighed all of 15 pounds, according to arrest reports obtained by The Miami Herald and Miami-based NBC affiliate WTVJ.

The children were taken from their parents after the parents took their children to Jackson North Medical Center – following what authorities say was a prolonged period of medical neglect.

The children “were not being fed properly,” police allege.

Both boys, it turned out, had been fed a steady diet of a pediatric vanilla shake, puréed banana, water and multigrain rice, according to the arrest reports. And both, as a result, had become malnourished – with the younger boy constipated due to the diet – police say.

The 4-year-old also had a broken arm and leg, doctors learned, and could neither walk nor talk. But the older boy did not fare much better. The 7-year-old is described as “non-verbal” and was never trained to use the bathroom, so he still wears diapers, according to police.

Child welfare authorities allege the children had not been to a doctor since 2022 – when the parents were referred to a specialist. The parents, however, never followed up until this summer, when they suspected their children had developmental disorders, police say.

Law enforcement said the couple’s other choices did not align with the years-long decision to forego their children medical care.

“In January 2025, the defendant and co-defendant leased an apartment that was furnished, and they financed a vehicle in February 202,” one report reads. “Those finances could have been utilized to fund the medical care of victim 1 and victim 2.”

In the arrest reports, police said the health of the children had improved since they were placed in the care of medical professionals.

The wife has since been released from jail.

The husband is currently being detained in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center – and has several warrants out for his arrest on a series of other unrelated charges.
