Authorities in Illinois have taken into custody the parents of a newborn after the infant was tragically discovered in a shallow grave last Friday. This shocking revelation came after an investigation into the events surrounding the baby’s birth and subsequent death.
Nicole Pokrzywa, 36, delivered a baby girl at a residence in Wilmington in October 2024. Disturbingly, the newborn was initially found in a toilet, where her father, William Cosmen, 38, allegedly attempted to dispose of her using a plunger, as reported by WSPY.
Following this harrowing incident, the infant’s body remained in the toilet overnight. Later, the remains were reportedly placed inside a beer box and buried on the property, marked only by a makeshift headstone, according to WFLD.
An autopsy revealed that the baby was between 24 and 27 weeks old at the time of her death, weighing between five and seven pounds. These details shed further light on the deeply troubling circumstances of her demise.
The investigation was prompted by a tip that led Will County police to the Wilmington site. There, officers discovered the remains buried three feet underground, wrapped in a plastic bag and cloth, inside an Old Style beer box. This grim discovery has left the local community in shock and mourning.
Cosmen and Pokrzywa are charged with desecration of a corpse. A cause of death remains undisclosed as additional testing is pending.
