A 36-year-old mother in Indiana and her 41-year-old husband were arrested for allegedly refusing to pick up their 13-year-old daughter from the hospital, with the mother telling a staff social worker she was “not dealing with this s—.”
Amanda D. Osmon, the child’s mother, and Jeffrey Scheda, her stepfather, were taken into custody over the weekend and charged with one count each of neglect of a dependent, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show.
The incident took place on Saturday at Ascension St. Vincent Evansville hospital, which is about 165 miles southwest of Indianapolis, Evansville NBC affiliate WFIE reported.
According to the report, the teen traveled to the hospital on her own in the afternoon and was admitted for a mental health evaluation check after having an argument with Osmon. Following the evaluation, the hospital social worker made several attempts to contact Osmon, all of which were unsuccessful.
The social worker at about 7 p.m. made contact with Scheda by phone. However, when the social worker asked Scheda to have Osmon call the hospital, he reportedly hung up on her.
The child had already been at the hospital for several hours when the social worker was able to get in touch with Osmon at about 10 p.m., Evansville ABC affiliate WEHT reported. The social worker described the conversation to police as “agitated” and eventually devolved into an argument about who would be coming to the hospital to get the child.
The conversation reportedly ended with Osmon saying, “I’m not dealing with this s— tonight,” and hanging up on the social worker, who told authorities that Osmon sounded like she was drunk.
On Sunday, officers with the Evansville Police Department went in the early morning hours to the parents home and made contact with the defendants. Police reportedly said that both Osmon and Scheda admitted to getting drunk and passing out while the 13-year-old was at the hospital.
Osmon reportedly told police that the teen had bit her during their argument earlier in the day and then claimed that the hospital hadn’t contacted her regarding the teen being discharged until 2:52 a.m. on Sunday, but she was unable to provide any proof to back the claim.
Both parents were taken into custody and processed at the Vanderburgh County Jail. They were released after posting bond of $1,500 each. Conditions of their release prohibit Osmon and Scheda from consuming alcohol and from having any contact with the victim without permission from the Department of Child Services.
Osmon and Scheda are currently scheduled to appear in court for their initial hearings on Jan. 29.
