A Saturday shopping trip in Tullytown, Pennsylvania, took a disturbing turn when a mother was apprehended at a Walmart following a troubling incident involving her child. A 911 caller informed law enforcement that he witnessed the woman dropping one of her children into a shopping cart with such force that the child was knocked unconscious.
According to Tullytown Borough police, the witness described the mother, later identified as Samantha Fletcher, as appearing intoxicated. The caller noted she was yelling profanities at her two young children and dragging one of them through the store by a backpack leash while the child cried.
Upon arrival, officers encountered Fletcher carrying the unconscious boy. Emergency medical personnel were summoned to provide immediate care for the child, who required medical attention.
Reports from Phillyburbs.com detail witness accounts describing Fletcher’s actions as repeatedly “slamming” the child into a shopping cart, culminating in the child losing consciousness after one particularly forceful impact.
According to Phillyburbs.com, shoppers reported that Fletcher “slammed” the boy into a shopping cart multiple times, hitting his head and losing consciousness during one of those times.
Police found Fletcher holding the boy with a girl asleep in the cart, a probable cause statement said. Medics were unable to awaken the boy, who by that time had a large bruise on his forehead. He was taken to St. Mary Medical Center, where he was found to have a serious concussion.
Child protective services took the children to their father’s home.
Fletcher was ultimately charged with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of children, recklessly endangering another person, and simple assault.
She was given a $100,000 bail, police said.
