A Florida cosmetologist and his sister allegedly ran a fake dental practice in Orlando for years, with the pair going so far as to shave down people’s teeth and place veneers in their mouths in exchange for thousands of dollars, local officials say.
One woman said that Carlos Rendon and Yorlady Rendon allegedly treated developed a bad gum infection in her mouth after receiving veneers that were too big, according to local Fox affiliate WOFL.
“[The woman] wanted to cry because of how they looked,” investigators told the station.
It’s unclear exactly how many people fell victim to the Rendons’ alleged ruse, but police say it had been going on for years. They racked up thousands in cash payments in exchange for the unlicensed dental work, with the exact numbers not being known either.
The Florida Department of Health told WOFL that Carlos Rendon is a licensed cosmetologist, which permits him to perform hair and nail services, but not medical or dental care.
“The girl ended up getting infections,” said Dr. Deoraj Ravi Lall, an actual dentist from the area.
“She can have many things go wrong that a typical person would not even think about treating,” he told WOFL. “If you get an infection in your gums, it can lead to a problem with your heart. It can lead to problems with your kidneys. It can lead to diabetes. You can get many problems.”
WOFL reports that the Rendons are facing felony charges, but they have not yet been announced yet. Florida DOH officials and police did not respond to Law&Crime’s requests for comment on Thursday.
