Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Ibrahima Mass Gueye, 18, and three juveniles were arrested yesterday and charged with attempted carjacking.

At about 5:28 p.m., Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call about an attempted carjacking in the Bellamy Grand apartment complex (2625 SW 75th Street), where the victim said four young people pulled up next to him in a black car. One of the suspects reportedly got out of the black car and told the victim, “I’m taking your vehicle,” and the victim said he could not have his vehicle. The victim said three more suspects got out of the black car and approached his vehicle, causing him to fear that they would “jump” him and take his vehicle. The victim said one of them, later identified as Gueye, threw an unknown liquid on him, and when he reached for his phone to call 911, one of the suspects quickly backed up and reached for his waistband; the victim said he feared he was reaching for a gun.

The victim said the suspects retreated to their car and fled southbound on Tower Road at a high rate of speed, and he followed them so he could report their location to law enforcement. The black car entered Garrison Way, where deputies soon found the car backed into a residential driveway and arrested four suspects; the arresting deputy reported that none of the suspects live in Garrison Way.

Deputies reportedly found a bag containing about 16.5 grams of marijuana near the car, and two of the suspects reportedly smelled like marijuana. The victim reportedly identified all four suspects as the individuals who had tried to take his vehicle.

Along with 18-year-old Gueye, two 17-year-olds and one 16-year-old were arrested.

Post Miranda, Gueye reportedly said the victim confronted them after he accidentally threw water on the victim, then all four of them got out of their car and approached the victim as he backed away, and then they all left in a hurry.

Post Miranda, one of the juvenile suspects reportedly declined to speak with the deputy; a second juvenile suspect said they were driving around Bellamy Grand when the victim said something “slick” to them, and they believed the victim was about to fight them; a third juvenile suspect said he was in the back seat of the car the whole time and didn’t know what happened.

All four suspects have been charged with attempted carjacking, conspiracy to commit carjacking, and possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana. Gueye has no criminal history; Judge Jonathan Ramsey ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s office to hold him without bail until trial.

Further information about the juvenile suspects is unavailable while they are in the juvenile justice system.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
