Authorities in Southern California are probing a potential link between a suicide in San Bernardino County and a double homicide in Ventura County.
According to reports from Simi Valley Police, officers responded to multiple calls about gunshots shortly before noon on Sunday. Upon arrival, they discovered a man and woman with multiple gunshot wounds in a driveway, as reported by KTLA. The victims, identified as Dr. Eric Cordes, 63, and his wife Vicki, 66, were rushed to a nearby hospital but tragically succumbed to their injuries.
Investigators revealed that the assailant approached the couple’s open garage and began shooting.
Approximately two and a half hours later, Chino police responded to a call about a car fire in a parking lot. Upon arrival, they discovered a deceased individual next to a black Honda Civic that was fully engulfed in flames. A firearm was also found at the scene, according to KNBC.
While the identity and cause of death of the deceased individual are pending confirmation by the San Bernardino County Coroner, Chino Police have been contacted by Simi Valley Police to discuss a possible connection between these two incidents.
“Chino Police Department personnel coordinated with the Simi Valley PD Public Information Officer, Detective Sergeant Rick Morton, who confirmed they were investigating the double homicide and sent detectives to Chino to determine whether the two incidents were related,” Chino police said in a statement Monday,. “Based on preliminary information, investigators believe the incidents are likely connected.”
Morton told KTLA that investigators think the killer knew the victims and that there may be a family connection. A neighbor told the station that the gunman may have been the couple’s stepson.
“That is one of the leads we’re looking into, but we are still trying to confirm if that is the case,” Morton said said.
Adventist Health Simi Valley said that Eric Cordes was a radiologist who worked at the hospital.
