An Indiana man finds himself behind bars following a dramatic incident that unfolded on the streets of Evansville. Authorities assert that Patrick Lee Ryan, aged 38, instigated a hit-and-run escapade while under the influence, culminating in a scene worthy of an action movie, with the other driver precariously clinging to the hood of Ryan’s vehicle.

The unsettling event unfolded on a seemingly ordinary Sunday afternoon near the intersection of N. Kentucky Avenue and E. Diamond Avenue. It was around 3:30 p.m. when Ryan allegedly collided with a fellow motorist, rear-ending their car. As the other driver emerged to assess the damage, a stark impression of Ryan’s impaired state left an indelible mark.

In a bid to document the aftermath, the other driver reached for their phone, only to discover it wasn’t on them. During this brief distraction, Ryan seized the moment to stagger back to his own car, visibly struggling to maintain his balance, as noted in the affidavit.

Once Ryan was ensconced in the driver’s seat, the situation escalated. He allegedly started the car and attempted to flee, inadvertently bumping the other driver in the process. In a desperate attempt to halt Ryan’s departure, the other driver ran up to the window, pleading for him to stop. Undeterred, Ryan allegedly continued, propelling the other driver onto the hood of his vehicle.

The impromptu ride ended after a short distance when Ryan finally stopped the car, allowing the shaken driver to dismount safely. Miraculously, no injuries were reported despite the alarming chain of events. Ryan now faces a slew of felony charges stemming from this reckless escapade, as documented in a probable cause affidavit reviewed by Law&Crime.

The affidavit stated that several witnesses called police to report a driver, later identified as Ryan, “swerving all over the road” before and after the alleged hit-and-run. When police finally caught up to Ryan and pulled him over, the officer said he smelled of alcohol. He was asked if he had been drinking, and he responded, “I had two beers.” Ryan was placed under arrest and brought to a hospital parking lot for a field sobriety test. He told police he would not answer questions.

Police said that during the sobriety test, Ryan told officers, “I am not going to pass this.”

After being medically cleared at the hospital, Ryan was free to be booked into jail.

Ryan was charged with criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, battery with a deadly weapon, leaving the scene of a crash, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He is in custody at the Vanderburgh County Jail, where he is being held without bond.
