A woman frantically flagged down a lawn care worker in broad daylight last month as she fled her Chicago suburb home after her husband allegedly tried to kill her, cops say.

Cody Romano, 34, has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault after police say he tried to suffocate his 29-year-old wife with a pillow inside their Buffalo Grove home on August 20, according to local police officials.

The wife, who has not been publicly identified, managed to escape his alleged attack by fleeing from the residence at around 11 a.m. and running to a lawn care employee who was nearby, cops say.

The worker allegedly protected Romano”s wife from him and tried to get between them as Romano tried repeatedly to pull her back inside the house.

“The female was able to struggle free and run onto the street where she found a lawn care worker, who shielded her as Mr. Romano tried to drag her back into the residence,” a Buffalo Grove Police Department press release says. “After a brief struggle, Mr. Romano fled the scene,” the release alleges.

Romano is accused of breaking his wife’s phone that morning before he allegedly tried to murder her, according to police. “It was learned the female’s husband … had attacked her in their residence, damaged her cellular phone and attempted to suffocate her with a pillow while asserting he was going to kill her,” the BGPD release says.

Romano allegedly fled the scene after police were called, but returned a short time later following their arrival, per cops. He allegedly suffered a “medical episode” that day after police took him into custody and needed to be taken to a hospital.

“Mr. Romano was released from the hospital on Aug. 28 and transported to the Buffalo Grove Police Department,” the BGPD release says.

Romano is facing four charges related to his alleged pillow attack, including attempted first-degree murder, aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery, and interfering with reporting domestic violence. He appeared in court last Friday and is being held without bond until his next hearing on Sept. 23, police say.
