A man from Wisconsin faces charges for allegedly trying to kill his wife as police officers arrived at their residence, with divorce talks looming large in their relationship.

According to records from the Ozaukee County jail, 53-year-old Guy Paider has been charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide and first-degree recklessly endangering safety. The incident occurred last Friday in a dramatic turn of events.

On the day of the incident, Paider’s wife consulted with a lawyer about her ongoing divorce case, as detailed in a criminal complaint viewed by ABC affiliate WISN from Milwaukee. After returning home, her husband repeatedly questioned her about her demands in the divorce, but she refused to discuss it in front of their child.

The child was then sent to their room, leaving the couple alone, according to investigators. At this point, Paider is accused of launching an attack on his wife.

She reportedly yelled for someone to “Call 911” before being thrown onto the bedroom carpet. She told police that Paider then opened a drawer, where he keeps his underwear, and retrieved a gun.

“Look at me, look at me, so you can see me when I shoot you,” Paider told her, according to the complaint.

Deputies with the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office were called at about 3:50 p.m. about the incident. They said Grafton Police Department officers arrived first, announcing their presence as they entered the home.

“A woman was heard calling for help,” according to the sheriff’s office. As officers approached the area from where her screams came, “a male subject fired multiple shots, striking the woman.” The man — later identified as Paider — was arrested and placed in the Ozaukee County Jail, authorities said.

The victim, a 48-year-old woman, “sustained serious injuries” and was ultimately airlifted to a hospital in Milwaukee. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

She was later listed as in stable condition.

Paider was a former West Allis firefighter, according to WISN. West Allis is just west of Milwaukee.
