A Texas teen who allegedly stabbed another teenage boy at a track meet over an argument about where he was sitting has been charged with murder.
Karmelo Anthony, 17, is being held without bond at Frisco City Jail after being charged with the murder of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf. According to the Frisco Police Department, officers responded to “an incident at a track meet” at Frisco Independent School District’s Kuykendall Stadium at about 10 a.m. on April 2. An altercation between Anthony and Metcalf, both high school students at competing schools, resulted in Metcalf being stabbed. Despite lifesaving measures by first responders, Metcalf died. Anthony was subsequently taken into custody.
KXAS, a local NBC affiliate, reported on more details about the reason for the fight, stating that Anthony allegedly argued with Metcalf over where Anthony was sitting in the bleachers. Metcalf’s father, Jeff Metcalf, told the station that the two student athletes didn’t know each other, but that the alleged argument was over seating in the bleachers at the track meet.
“End result,” Jeff Metcalf said, “he stabbed my son in the heart and killed him.”
“Something so small, so trivial,” he added.
KXAS reported that according to Jeff Metcalf, the disagreement was triggered when Anthony, who was allegedly carrying a knife, was told that he was sitting in the wrong place. Law&Crime reached out to the Frisco Police Department to confirm this detail but they would not provide further information about the case. It was not clear who initially confronted Anthony about where he was sitting.
Austin Metcalf was with his identical twin brother, Hunter Metcalf, who told local ABC affiliate WFAA that he tried to save his brother’s life after he was allegedly attacked, but was ultimately unable to save him. He told WFAA, “I looked at my brother and I’m not going to talk about the rest. I tried to help him.”
Jeff Metcalf told KXAS, “his brother was holding on to him, trying to make it stop bleeding, and he died in his brother’s arms.”
Anthony was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He is currently in custody at Frisco City Jail but is expected to be transferred to Collin County Jail, according to reporting by Newsweek.
