A Florida man was caught trying to dig a grave for another man he’d just assaulted, but the wounded man was still alive, police said.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said in a post on Facebook that Giovanni Bubenik, 29, attacked an unnamed man in a transient camp in DeLand, Florida, by striking him “in the back of the head multiple times.” The alleged victim was found by sheriff’s deputies on March 15, a moment caught on body camera by the police department and posted on Facebook. Also caught on camera was the March 21 arrest of Bubenik, who was found with the help of the department’s K-9 unit.
According to the sheriff’s office, the alleged victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Since he was admitted, police stated that he has “regained consciousness” but may have “significant long-term injury and memory loss.”

Bubenik was tracked down by deputies to a residence where he was hiding behind a shed. Police said he had been identified as a suspect following an investigation into the alleged assault. Bubenik allegedly started digging a grave for the injured man in the woods near the transient camp.
After Bubenik was arrested and taken into custody, he was charged with attempted first-degree murder and held by the Volusia County Division of Corrections without bond. He was also charged with obstructing an officer during arrest without violence.
Bubenik is scheduled to be arraigned in court on April 10.
