Las Vegas officials confirmed Tuesday that a search warrant was executed in connection with the 1996 unsolved drive-by shooting death of rapper Tupac Shakur.

A home was searched Monday in Henderson, Nevada, a city less than 20 miles from Las Vegas. Police confirmed in a statement to NBC News that the search was “part of the ongoing Tupac Shakur homicide investigation.”

“We will have no further comment at this time,” the statement concluded.

When was Tupac Shakur murdered?

Shakur, one of the most influential names in hip-hop, was gunned down at a stoplight one block away from the Las Vegas strip, and then rushed to a hospital. He died at age 25 on September 13, 1996, six days after the shooting.

The slaying happened six months prior to the deadly shooting of The Notorious B.I.G., the rapper who was born Christopher Wallace, and whose 1997 murder has also gone unsolved.

The East Coast-West Coast hip hop rivalry between the two artists has sparked various theories over the years about their deaths.

What were Tupac Shakur’s biggest hits?

During his career, Shakur had 21 songs on the Billboard Top 100 charts, with his 1996 hit “How Do U Want It/California Love” holding a two-week streak at the No. 1 spot.

The late rapper is also a six-time Grammy nominee in categories like best rap solo performance, and best rap album.

While alive, Shakur had two No. 1 albums: 1995’s Me Against the World and 1996’s All Eyez on Me. Three posthumous releases also hit No. 1, including the 1996 album, The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, which was recorded under the name Makaveli, according to Billboard, 2001’s Until The End of Time and 2004’s Loyal to the Game.

Shakur was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame by Snoop Dogg in 2017 and received a posthumous Hollywood Walk of Fame star in June.

“Tupac knew deep down that he was always meant for something great,” his sister Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur told NBC News at the Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony for her late brother.

“And as his little sister, I had the privilege to watch that greatness unfold,” she said.

In honor of the hip-hop icon, the city council in Oakland, California where Shakur launched his music career, voted to rename a part of MacArthur Blvd. to Tupac Shakur Way, NBC Bay Area station KNTV reported in May. The city previously dedicated June 16 as Tupac Shakur Day.
