Kelly Siegler is revisiting “one of the most difficult” cases from her career as a prosecutor.
The Season 2 premiere of Prosecuting Evil with Kelly Siegler, airing Saturday, January 25 at 8 p.m., will take a look at the murder of Belinda Temple, a pregnant woman shot dead in her Texas home in January 1999. The investigation led to the arrest of Belinda Temple’s husband, David Temple, a high school football coach.
When the case ultimately went to trial in 2007, Kelly Siegler served as a prosecutor, arguing that David Temple murdered Belinda Temple so he could be with his mistress. Jurors voted to convict David Temple of murder and sentenced him to life.
However, years later, an appeals court granted David Temple a retrial after it was determined that Siegler withheld exculpatory evidence. Temple was released from prison and faced trial for a second time before being convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
Here’s what to know about the case ahead of the Season 2 premiere of Prosecuting Evil.
What happened to Belinda Temple?
Belinda Temple was a special education teacher at a Katy, Texas, high school in 1999, according to ABC News.
She had moved to the suburbs of Houston after marrying her college sweetheart, David Temple, in 1992. Together, they welcomed their son, Evan, and were preparing for the arrival of their second child, a baby girl they planned to name Erin.
But that all changed when Belinda Temple, then eight months pregnant, was found dead in the master bedroom closet of their home, having been shot once in the back of the head, ABC News reported. Investigators thought she might have been the victim of a burglary gone wrong, as there were items strewn around the house and drawers were left opened.
The case against David Temple
Though it appeared that Belinda Temple was a victim of a burglary, investigators noted that jewelry left in plain sight hadn’t been stolen and the door that was broken to gain entry didn’t “look right,” Sgt. Dean Holtke of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office told ABC News.
Officials began to suspect David Temple was involved in his wife’s murder after discovering that he was having an affair with Heather Scott, a coworker at the school where he worked. When the case went to trial in 2007, prosecutors argued that his affair with Scott — who married David Temple in 2001 and testified in both trials — gave him a motive to murder Belinda Temple.
A jury ultimately voted to convict David Temple of murder and sentenced him to life in prison — though he’d be released in 2016 after an appeals court ruled that the prosecution withheld evidence that could’ve impacted the outcome of the trial, the Associated Press reported.
David Temple has since faced a second trial and is back in prison after another jury found him guilty of murder.
