Former NFL player Sergio Brown has been arrested and is facing a murder charge in the death of his mother, whose body was found last month with “multiple injuries,” authorities announced Wednesday.

Brown, 35, was taken into custody Tuesday in San Diego while returning to the United States from Mexico, the Village of Maywood Police Department in Illinois said in a press release.

What will former NFL player Sergio Brown be charged with?

The San Diego Police Department Threat Management Unit, along with other local and federal agencies, arrested Brown after a warrant was issued for first-degree murder for the death of his 73-year-old mom, Myrtle Brown, according to the Village of Maywood Police Department. As of Wednesday, Brown was awaiting extradition to Maywood, Illinois, to face the charge.

Myrtle Brown’s Body Found Near the Home She Shared with Sergio Brown

Myrtle and Brown were initially reported missing last month, before Myrtle’s body was discovered.

“On Saturday, September 16, 2023, when family members and authorities were unable to locate Mrs. Myrtle Brown nor Sergio Brown, both were considered missing persons,” Maywood Police stated Wednesday.

After a brief search of the home that Brown and his mom shared in Maywood, which is located in the Chicago metropolitan area, Myrtle’s body was discovered near a creek not far from the residence, authorities added.

A spokesperson for the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office in Illinois told Oxygen on Wednesday that Myrtle’s cause of death was “multiple injuries due to assault,” and that her manner of death was homicide.

What teams did Sergio Brown play for in the NFL?

Brown made his NFL debut in 2010 as a safety for the New England Patriots. He later signed with the Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons and the Buffalo Bills before his NFL career ended in 2016.

In a Facebook post from September 17, the day after Myrtle’s body was found, her son Nick Brown, a brother of the ex-NFL player, paid tribute to his mom and called on his sibling to return home.

“It’s a sad but hopeful time, and we will all get through this together,” Nick posted. “Mom always told me, ‘tough times don’t last’ and our last conversation about tough times being temporary is my beacon of hope. Mom, thank you for being strong, caring, diligent, fancy, funny, and for saving my art. I won’t let you down.”

With his brother still missing at the time, Nick pleaded: “If anyone knows where he is I want him to know that I love you and please come home.”

Authorities ask that anyone with any info of the incident contact Maywood Police Investigations Sergeant Pezdek at (708) 368-4131 or the Maywood Police Department Anonymous Tip Line at (708) 450-1787.
