Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos remains hopeful about the fate of missing Arizona resident Nancy Guthrie, believing that the 84-year-old is still alive.
“We have no evidence to suggest otherwise, and we hold on to the hope that she is still with us,” Nanos shared with NBC News’ Liz Kreutz during an interview on Wednesday. “Our goal is to find her safe and bring her back home.”
Nancy Guthrie, who is the mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, was last seen in the Catalina Foothills area near Tucson late Saturday night, as previously reported by CrimeOnline. Her family reported her missing the following day, around noon on Sunday.
On Sunday evening, Sheriff Nanos noted that investigators found “concerning” evidence at her residence. By Monday, authorities confirmed suspicions that Nancy had been taken from her bed.
“Given her mobility issues, this situation is particularly troubling,” commented Nancy Grace, host of Crime Stories. “We’ve also learned that there are indications of forced entry.”
Nanos said late Sunday that investigators “saw some things at the home that were concerning to us,” but on Monday, he said investigators stated that someone took her from her bed.
“She has mobility problems,” Crime Stories host, Nancy Grace, said. “We’re now learning there were signs of forced entry.”
According to what the sheriff’s office told TMZ, an elderly neighbor reported seeing a suspicious person near his home, which is about 10 minutes away from Nancy’s residence. The information is now being explored as a possible lead.
The neighbor reportedly said that he didn’t get to see the man’s face, who had been loitering in his yard before fleeing. No items were taken, the neighbor said.
Meanwhile, Nanos added that authorities are currently “working closely” with the family, adding that Guthrie’s son-in-law is not considered a suspect, despite rumors.
“At this point, we have not identified a suspect or a person of interest in the case.”
