A New York man stands accused of a vicious assault on his elderly mother, allegedly asking, “Why aren’t you dying?” as he struck her with a metal object and attempted to choke her.

John Strano, 37, faces charges including attempted second-degree murder, two counts of second-degree assault, criminal obstruction, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, following the alleged attack on his 75-year-old mother. This information comes from a statement by the Nassau County Police Department.

Authorities responded to a call at a residence in Williston Park at 5:42 p.m. on April 1. Upon arrival, they discovered the injured woman, who recounted to officers that a dispute with her son had escalated into violence.

“Strano pushed the victim to the ground and repeatedly slammed her head to the ground,” police reported. “He continued to punch her in the face multiple times and hit her head with a blunt metal object.”

Police also allege that Strano attempted to choke his mother before he fled the scene.

The victim was transported to an area hospital, where police said she was listed in stable condition, while Strano was taken into custody at a nearby location “without incident.”

In court, according to News 12, prosecutors provided more details about the alleged attack, saying that Strano struck his mom more than three dozen times with a metal clamp to the back of her head.

Strano allegedly told police that he’d asked his mother “Why aren’t you dying?” and “Why are you still breathing?” as he carried out the attack, prosecutors said.

They added that the victim had swelling to her face and head, severe lacerations and was knocked unconscious during the incident.

Oxygen reached out to the Legal Aid Society of Nassau County, who is representing Strano, but did not receive an immediate reply.

The 37-year-old is expected to appear back in court on April 6, according to court records reviewed by Oxygen
