Authorities have unveiled shocking new specifics in the Bryan Kohberger murder case, shedding light on the brutal stabbing of University of Idaho students and the actions he allegedly took following the horrific incident.

On November 13, 2022, Kohberger reportedly broke into a residence in Moscow, Idaho, where he brutally stabbed Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, Kaylee Goncalves, and Ethan Chapin over 150 times, as revealed in recent court documents featuring expert testimony from prosecutors. This information was published by People on January 27. However, these documents only include selected findings, not the complete autopsy reports.

Mogen and Goncalves were discovered together in an upstairs room. The documents reveal that Goncalves endured “at least 38” stab wounds, while Mogen was stabbed 28 times. Investigators informed ABC News that Kernodle possibly confronted Kohberger during the attack and suffered 67 stab wounds. Chapin received 17 stab wounds.

In July 2025, Kohberger admitted guilt to the murders through a plea agreement, resulting in four consecutive life sentences, along with an additional 10 years for a burglary charge. He is currently incarcerated at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution.

At the time of these heinous acts, Kohberger was a criminology student at Washington State University. The motive behind these murders remains unclear. Two other roommates, Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funke, were present in the off-campus house during the murders but were unharmed.

People reported on the explicit nature of the attacks, per the court filings.

Goncalves and Mogen died from “multiple sharp force injuries” while Goncalves experienced “blunt force injuries of the head and asphyxial injuries.” Goncalves’ scalp, face, neck and chest were targeted with dozens of stabs, while her skull was punctured and her teeth and tongue injured, among other injuries.

Mogen was stabbed 13 times in the scalp, neck and face, along with in her chest and other areas in her upper extremities, according to the outlet.

The cause of death for Chapin and Kernodle, who were dating each other, were  “multiple sharp force injuries,” People reported.

Dr. Brent Turvey, a crime scene expert for the defense, theorized in the court filings that Kohberger may have toyed with two of the victims’ bodies, per People.

“The evidence suggests that after both victims were killed or unresponsive they were posed in their shared bed,” Turvey said in the filings. “Kaylee was moved from a position with her head on her pillow to partially atop of Madison. Then the comforter was placed over them both.”

Turvey’s assessment stemmed from where Goncalves’ blood appeared on the pillow, according to People, noting that prosecutors regarded it “a possibility, but not a determination,” due to a scenario in which Goncalves could have moved around during the attack.

Oxygen was unable to immediately obtain the aforementioned court filings.
