A Nevada judge has ruled that a 15-year-old boy will face trial as an adult in connection with a sexual assault that took place during a school trip last year. This decision was made on Thursday, marking a significant development in a case that has captured public attention.

The teenager is one of two students from the Alexander Dawson School who will be tried as adults. The charges stem from an incident in Costa Rica, where the alleged rape was recorded and shared. According to Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson, local authorities are unable to prosecute for the assault itself due to jurisdictional limitations, as reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Stacy Kollins revealed that the assault involved the teen and at least three other boys who allegedly “gang raped” the male victim. It was further alleged that the teenager exacerbated the situation by showing a video of the assault to another child while the victim was present, adding to his trauma.

Prosecutors have accused the teen, along with another 15-year-old facing adult charges, of threatening the victim to prevent him from reporting the incident. The charges against the teenager include possession of child sexual abuse material and child abuse.

Kollins stated, as per KLAS, that the teenager had stored images of the assault on a Snapchat account and had shown them to other students. This aspect of the case highlights the disturbing misuse of social media in the perpetuation of the crime.

The other 15-year-old boy was charged with possession of a visual presentation depicting sexual conduct of a child. He was charged as an adult in January.

The other two boys who allegedly carried out last year’s rape are not facing any criminal charges.
