In California, a 10-year-old boy is currently under the care of mental health experts after reportedly stabbing a 7-year-old girl with a kitchen knife at an elementary school on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident, as detailed by the City of Mountain View, unfolded around 3:30 p.m. in the playground of Benjamin Bubb Elementary School. The young girl, who was attending an after-school program at the time, sustained three stab wounds in her shoulder.
First responders from the Mountain View Fire Department provided immediate medical assistance on-site before the girl was returned to her parents’ care.
The attack prompted an urgent lockdown of the school as the boy fled the scene. Authorities managed to identify the suspect through footage from nearby home surveillance cameras. A K-9 unit from the Los Altos Police Department successfully located the boy at his residence.
Police officers, in coordination with the boy’s guardian, ensured his peaceful surrender. Given his age and the circumstances, Pacific Clinics, which handles juvenile mental health services for Santa Clara County, assumed responsibility for his care.
The boy did not attend the school, and was not enrolled “in the after-school program,” according to ABC 7.
The investigation is ongoing, and police have not yet released a motive for the attack.
