An Idaho resident was taken into custody on Tuesday following allegations of assault against a woman and an infant.

Authorities from the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic disturbance call, arriving to find a woman fleeing an apartment, her cries piercing the air. Accompanying her were two distressed children. According to East Idaho News, the woman reported that 23-year-old Carlos Swearingen had been consuming alcohol throughout the night and had threatened the lives of two relatives after opening some mail.

As police approached the apartment, they heard a loud noise inside. Upon entry, they found Swearingen, who was partially undressed and had visible scratches on his body. Swearingen admitted to shoving the woman but denied further violence. However, the woman recounted a different story, alleging that Swearingen hurled a mixture of onions, hot dumplings, and chili oil at their 3-month-old child following a disagreement.

She further claimed that while she was attempting to clean the soup off the baby, Swearingen approached her from behind, applied hot chili oil to her eyes, and pulled her hair. As she struggled to rinse her eyes, Swearingen allegedly struck her on the side of her head, according to reports from East Idaho News.

The woman described a terrifying scene, stating that while she was trying to exit the bathroom with the baby, she pleaded with Swearingen to cease his attack. His response, she alleged, was a dismissive expletive, and he continued to assault her despite her protests.

The woman said she eventually gave the baby to her 5-year-old child before lying on the floor in a defensive position. She reportedly tried to retrieve her phone from the living room, but Swearingen took it and threw it against a wall.

The woman said she scratched Swearingen during the assault, and he had put her in a rear-naked choke. The 5-year-old child corroborated many of the woman’s allegations regarding Tuesday’s incident, according to East Idaho News.

Swearingen was charged with attempted strangulation, injury to a child, domestic battery without traumatic injury, and domestic battery or assault in the presence of a child. His bond was set at $75,000.
