A Texas man faces allegations of abandoning a 1-month-old infant on the doorstep of the child’s mother, according to authorities who claim security footage supports the accusation.
Merquez Bershawn James, aged 35, is charged with the felony of abandoning or endangering a child without the intention to return, as reported by Waco’s CBS affiliate, KWTX. Police responded to a residence in the 200 block of North Lakeview Drive around 2 p.m. on November 28. This response came after the child’s mother reported that James informed her he would be dropping off their baby.
Despite being informed by the mother that she was not at home, James allegedly proceeded to leave the infant, strapped in a car seat, unattended on the porch.
Authorities have stated that footage from a doorbell camera captures James leaving the baby, according to police documents referenced by KWTX.
In the arrest report, officers noted their presence at the scene for over 30 minutes without James returning. During this time, the temperature was 61 degrees Fahrenheit, with a wind chill making it feel like 51 degrees.
The child’s mother said she had called James several times to tell him to go back and get the child, but he allegedly did not do so.
According to KWTX, James was held on a $10,000 bond. The McLennan County jail confirmed to Law&Crime that James was brought into the facility on Wednesday, but was no longer in custody as of Friday.
James faces a potential maximum of 20 years in prison for the felony charge.
