Authorities are urgently searching for Savannah Guthrie’s mother, who is believed to have been forcibly taken from her residence in what police suspect could be a kidnapping. The 84-year-old woman’s disappearance has prompted a swift and focused investigation.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos informed NBC News on the evening of February 2, stating, “We have reason to believe she was removed from her home against her will, and our investigation is proceeding on that basis.”

The search for Nancy Guthrie has become increasingly urgent, with Sheriff Nanos describing it as a “race against time” as officers diligently work to uncover any leads that might reveal her location.

Guthrie was last seen by her family within her Tucson, Arizona home at approximately 9:30 p.m. on January 31. However, she did not attend church the following morning, a concerning development given her reported poor physical health.

Kevin Adger, a spokesperson for the department, told The Los Angeles Times, “At this stage, investigators suspect she was taken from her home against her will, possibly during the night. Detectives are currently examining a potential kidnapping or abduction scenario.”

Authorities developed the theory after noting “very concerning” circumstances inside Nancy’s home, which, according to comments Nanos made in a Feb. 2 press conference, is now being viewed as a “crime scene.”

“She is very limited in her mobility,” he explained. “We know she didn’t just walk out of there.”

Sgt. David Stivers also noted there were other elements of the scene that were “suspicious in nature,” but declined to elaborate further.

Law enforcement authorities told NBC News they believe Nancy was likely harmed when she was taken.

It’s critical to find Nancy, Nanos said at the press conference, because she’s taking medication that if she doesn’t receive it within a 24-hour period “could be fatal.”

He asked those in the area for help by searching through their surveillance footage or reporting anything suspicious they noticed around the time of the disappearance.

“I need this community to step up and and start giving us some some calls let us know if you’ve seen something,” Nanos said. “We are at a time where, in this investigation, we are now moving forward where we need to depend on technology.”

Savannah—who is in Arizona to aid in the search effort—took to Instagram Feb. 2 to ask the public for their prayers.

“We believe in prayer. we believe in voices raised in unison, in love, in hope. we believe in goodness,” the TODAY co-host wrote. “We believe in humanity. above all, we believe in Him.”

“Thank you for lifting your prayers with ours for our beloved mom, our dearest Nancy, a woman of deep conviction, a good and faithful servant,” she continued. “Raise your prayers with us and believe with us that she will be lifted by them in this very moment.”

Savannah then wrote “we need you” and referenced a bible verse before concluding the post, “Bring her home.”

Nancy is described as 5-foot-5 and weighing 150 pounds. She has brown hair and blue eyes.

Anyone with information on the case is being asked to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at (520) 351-4900.
