In a shocking development, a step-sibling might soon face criminal charges related to the tragic death of an 18-year-old Florida cheerleader aboard a Carnival cruise ship earlier this month.

This unexpected twist in the investigation into Anna Kepner’s death was revealed through a family court filing by her stepmother, Shauntel Hudson. Hudson is seeking a postponement of a custody hearing, according to a report from ABC News. In her filing, Hudson stated, “The Respondent has been advised through discussions with FBI investigators and her attorneys, that a criminal case may be initiated against one of the minor children of this instant action,” highlighting the potential legal implications for her family.

Hudson expressed concern that any testimony she provides, whether written or verbal, might adversely affect her or her child during the ongoing criminal investigation. As a result, she argues, she should not be compelled to testify at this juncture.

The FBI, which is spearheading the inquiry into Kepner’s untimely death, has chosen not to comment on the matter. Hudson’s court documents specifically mention the FBI’s involvement, citing their investigation into the “sudden death of 18-year-old Anna Kepner.”

Kepner’s lifeless body was discovered on November 7 while the Carnival Horizon cruise ship was docked in Cuba. This was reported by CrimeOnline. The ship quickly returned to Florida to facilitate the investigation. Reports suggest that Kepner had retired to her cabin on November 6, complaining of feeling unwell. Her absence was noted when she failed to reappear, and the following morning, a maid discovered her body hidden under the bed, shrouded with life jackets and a blanket.

The medical examiner has not yet revealed a cause of death.

Hudson and her children were on the cruise along with Kepner’s father, Christopher Kepner, and his daughter were on the cruise.

ABC News said it had asked for a comment from the family but has not heard back.
