A 92-year-old millionaire real estate mogul was discovered deceased and in a state of decomposition within a luxurious beachfront property in Hermosa Beach, California, last week. Following a tense seven-hour standoff, authorities apprehended a suspect.
According to a statement from Hermosa Beach police, officers were called for a welfare check around midday on Saturday. This request came after the landlord noted an absence of communication from a tenant over several days.
“Upon arrival, officers observed evidence suggesting a possible deceased person was inside the residence,” police stated. They were granted access by the property manager and discovered an individual inside who was not the tenant. This person was uncooperative, made statements implying they might be armed, and subsequently barricaded themselves within the home.
Specialized SWAT units were deployed, and negotiators successfully convinced the suspect to come out peacefully.
Upon entering the residence, investigators found the body of Demetrius Doukoullos, a well-known figure in real estate development, as reported by KTLA.
The suspect was identified by two names, 39-year-old Robert Phillip Simmons and Elanor Beaulieu. During the stand-off, residents and tourists were evacuated from the area. Simmons/Beaulieu finally came out of the residence looking like a “Blues Brother,” wearing a dark suit, white shirt, dark tie, sunglasses, and fedora.
On Tuesday, prosecutors charged Simmons/Beaulieu with a single count of murder. The indictment said that investigators believe Doukoullos was killed sometime between March 7 and March 14.
