Press release from Gainesville Police Department

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – On Tuesday, January 11, 2024, The Gainesville Police Department with the assistance of the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and Columbia County Sheriff’s Office apprehended James Tate. Tate is a subject involved in the incident below. 

At approximately 2:39 a.m., Gainesville Police Officers were dispatched to the area of 4700 NW 16th Place in reference to a report of a person who was shot. Upon arrival, officers discovered a white male victim with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was deceased at the scene.   

Information received stated the suspect may be driving a silver Chevrolet work pick-up truck. Officers located a vehicle a short distance away matching the information provided and attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as James Tate, refused to stop and fled at a high rate of speed. A vehicle pursuit was initiated. 

The pursuit involved units from the Gainesville Police Department, Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, and Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. Tate would eventually crash in Columbia County and be taken into custody.
