A 19-year-old driver allegedly traveling with a blood alcohol concentration more than twice Michigan’s legal limit is accused of running a red light and crashing into a teacher who was working as an Uber driver for extra income. The collision proved fatal.
Tracy Darwin Sutton faces charges of operating while intoxicated causing death and operating while intoxicated causing serious injury in connection with the death of 59-year-old Dwayne Antonio Harvey.
Oak Park police, in the Detroit suburbs, said officers were called shortly before 11 p.m. Sept. 17 to a crash at Eight Mile Road and Coolidge Highway. At the scene, they found a Dodge Charger and a Buick Envision, both heavily damaged.
A 23-year-old passenger from the Charger had been thrown from the vehicle and was found in the roadway. He was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Sutton, who was driving the Charger, sustained minor injuries.
Emergency responders had to remove Harvey from the Envision. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
Surveillance footage from a nearby business appeared to show Sutton heading east on Eight Mile Road before allegedly driving through a red light and striking Harvey’s Envision as it traveled north on Coolidge Highway.

Sutton’s blood alcohol level was reportedly measured at 0.161, according to local Fox affiliate WJBK. That reading is more than twice the legal limit for drivers.
Harvey taught mathematics at Oak Park High School and drove for Uber outside school hours.
Oak Park High School remembered Harvey as a teacher who made a lasting impression on students and colleagues. “At Oak Park High School, he was known for his warm smile, positive spirit, and genuine connection with students,” the school said in a Facebook post. “He encouraged others, showed up for his students and colleagues, and brought a special energy to our school community each day.”
Harvey also served as the senior class sponsor and loved Prince’s music, as well as the color purple. Students and staff planned to wear purple and play his favorite songs Friday in his honor.
“Mr. Harvey will be remembered for his kindness, his dedication to students, and the positive presence he brought to Oak Park High School each day. He will always be a part of the Oak Park Schools family and will be deeply missed,” the school said.
Sutton was taken to the Oakland County Jail and is being held on a $2 million bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 29.
