A teenager from Georgia is on the mend after being shot by an unidentified assailant moments following her Instagram livestream.

Raven Brown was eagerly anticipating her 18th birthday on the evening of February 1st, commemorating the occasion via a live Instagram session. As she shared with WSB, the local ABC station, she was chatting with friends from her bedroom in Atlanta when, shortly after ending the stream, she heard gunshots and felt a sudden, intense pain.

Brown recounted to WSB, saying, “I dropped to the ground, my arm and two fingers went numb, and my brother asked if I was alright. I told him, ‘I’m shot, I got hit.’”

The Atlanta Police Department, in a brief statement to Law&Crime, confirmed that they responded to a shooting incident at 11:40 p.m. on February 1st. Upon reaching the location, officers found Brown with a gunshot wound, yet she was “conscious and breathing.” According to the police, Brown tried to find safety after hearing the gunfire but was struck before she could do so. She was the only one wounded in the incident, although a vehicle parked outside her family’s home also suffered damage from the bullets.

Speaking to the local Fox affiliate WAGA from her hospital bed, Brown explained, “I wasn’t aware I had been shot until I collapsed.” She then rushed to her mother’s room to inform her of the shooting.

Brown is still recovering in the hospital after suffering a broken shoulder and rib. She told WAGA the bullet is still inside her after doctors decided it was too close to a major artery to remove.

Brown’s family started a GoFundMe page to raise money for her medical bills and support the family while she recovers. According to the fundraiser, her mother chose to take time off from work to care for her daughter.

Police recovered shell casings at the scene, but did not name a suspect. They said the investigation is ongoing.
