A Georgia man who worked as an Uber driver allegedly shot a teenage girl after an argument at a Waffle House over his refusal to fit all of her friends in his car.

Meredith Grundy, 38, posted bond after he was arrested early Sunday morning by Dunwoody Police Department officers. According to police, Grundy was working as an Uber driver when he was called to a Waffle House in Dunwoody. When he arrived, there were five teenage girls expecting a ride, but he told them that he did not have enough room for all of them, nor were there enough seatbelts to transport them safely.

An argument ensued, police said, and it soon escalated when one of the teens allegedly “threatened to kill” Grundy and “struck him in the face.” Grundy then allegedly retrieved a gun and shot the girl several times.

In a press release, Dunwoody police stated that the other four girls told them that the alleged threats were not made before Grundy allegedly opened fire. The 16-year-old girl who was allegedly shot by Grundy was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for gunshot wounds to her back and legs. WANF, a local independent news station, reported that the girl was in critical but stable condition as of Tuesday.

Grundy was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm. According to jail records, he posted bond, but a specific date was unclear. Law&Crime reached out to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office for clarification but did not receive an immediate response.

In response to the allegations against Grundy, Uber confirmed his link to the company and provided a statement to WANF, which said, “The reported details of this incident are horrifying. We removed the driver’s access to the platform and stand ready to support law enforcement with their investigation.”
