In a tragic turn of events, a young woman from Wisconsin faces a sentence of more than a decade in prison following a fatal drunk-driving incident that claimed the lives of two of her friends.

Laney Peters, now 21, submitted a no-contest plea to charges of two counts of homicide and one count of causing injury, all by intoxicated vehicle use. This plea stems from a devastating car crash on June 24, 2024, when Peters, then just 19, drove with passengers including her 19-year-old friends, Mee-Mingwa Phillips and Emma Daniels. Also in the vehicle were her 16-year-old sister and a dog.

As detailed in a criminal complaint acquired by WLUK, a local Fox outlet, Peters openly acknowledged consuming alcohol before driving.

In a heart-wrenching courtroom statement, Brooke Big John-Ramos, the mother of Emma Daniels, addressed Peters, stating, “The reckless choices you made that evening took away everything she was and could have become — a cherished daughter, devoted granddaughter, beloved sister, treasured niece, and loyal friend.”

Phillips’ grandmother, Lois Franklin, told the court, “I hate to say this but I hate the girl who did this, because I heard Mee-Mingwa cry out ‘Slow down!’ and she didn’t listen. I hope that she finds it in her heart to change her ways.”

Peters was sentenced to 12 years in prison plus 12 years of supervised release. She was ordered to maintain sobriety and not to have contact with her victims’ families.
