A tragic incident unfolded in California when a newly-appointed grandmother, who returned to her store at the local mall to collect her paycheck, was brutally stabbed to death.
Nineteen-year-old Tyler Leibelt was taken into custody on July 21 following the murder of 73-year-old Rachell Summers. As detailed by the Capitola Police Department, this heinous act against Summers on July 20 was described as a “random act of violence.” Police records, revealed by local NBC affiliate KSBW, confirm that Leibelt admitted to the crime, stating that Summers was not intended to be his first victim.
Leibelt allegedly arrived at the Capitola Mall with the premeditated intention to take a life, authorities reported.
KSBW further disclosed that Summers served as the manager of Art of Santa Cruz, a nonprofit establishment dedicated to supporting local artists. Having recently become a grandmother, Summers cherished the dream of her grandchild’s bright academic future. A heartfelt GoFundMe campaign created by her loved ones emphasized her vision for her grandchild’s education and future ambitions.
Leibelt was charged with first-degree murder and is in custody at the Santa Cruz County Jail, where he is being held without bail. His next court date is scheduled for July 29.
