The FBI has joined the investigation into the disappearance of 7-year-old Kyron Horman.

On the morning he vanished, Skyline Elementary School in northwest Portland, Oregon, was hosting its annual science fair. The school opened about 30 minutes earlier than usual to allow parents and students to view the projects.

Kyron arrived just after 8 a.m. with his stepmother, Terri Horman. The two went to his classroom, where Kyron dropped off his coat and backpack. He then showed her his science fair exhibit, titled “The Red-Eyed Tree Frog.”

They walked through the school looking at other students’ projects and saw several parents and children who had also arrived early. Terri Horman volunteered to help Kyron’s teacher, Kristina Porter. Porter later told authorities she saw both Kyron and Terri in the classroom that morning. Another teacher reported seeing them in a different classroom before the 8:45 a.m. school bell rang.

As Terri Horman left the school, she said she saw Kyron walking down a hallway toward his classroom. His coat and backpack had already been placed inside Miss Porter’s room when they first arrived.

Miss Porter started her class as usual, followed by reading group, recess, and lunch. Around 3 p.m., students boarded buses to go home.

Kyron’s father, Kaine Horman, was at home getting his daughter ready to meet Kyron at the bus stop. When Kyron didn’t get off the bus, Kaine assumed there had been a mix-up and that Kyron was waiting to be picked up at school. The bus driver called the school, but the front office confirmed Kyron had been marked absent and had not been seen all day.

Investigators quickly began building a timeline. Kyron arrived at school with Terri Horman around 8 a.m. for the science fair. The two were seen interacting with teachers and parents. Terri said goodbye to Kyron near the hallway leading to his classroom around 8:45 a.m., near the school’s south entrance.

Investigators said one additional witness reported seeing Kyron around 9 a.m., but they have not identified that person
