Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Herriford sentenced Lanez, 31, to serve 10 years in prison Tuesday following his December conviction for assault with a semiautomatic firearm, carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.

In court during Tuesday’s sentencing, Lanez said of the 2020 incident with Megan Thee Stallion, “If I could change it, I would, but I can’t,” according to NBC News“Everything I did that night, I take full responsibility. I truly am just trying to be a better person.”

In his Thursday Instagram post, he stressed that he was not apologizing for what he was convicted of.

“This week in court I took responsibility for all verbal and intimate moments that I shared with the parties involved… That’s it,” ” Lanez posted. “In no way shape or form was I apologizing for the charges I’m being wrongfully convicted of. I remain on the stance that I refuse to apologize for something that I did not do.”

The Canadian rapper born Daystar Peterson was convicted of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the feet outside of a house party hosted by Kylie Jenner on July 12, 2020. In her testimony during the trial, Megan, whose legal name is Megan Pete, said Lanez shouted at her to, “Dance bitch,” before shooting at her, leaving the “Savage” rapper with bullet fragments in her feet.

“Since I was viciously shot by the defendant, I have not experienced a single day of peace,” Megan said in a statement read by Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Kathy Ta at the sentencing.

Following the sentencing hearing, Lanez’s lead attorney Jose Baez called the sentence “really just another example of someone being punished for their celebrity status and someone being utilized to set an example. And he’s not an example. He’s a human being.”

Lanez’s lawyers say they plan to appeal the verdict, according to the Associated Press. They also plan to seek bail for Lanez while they do.

“I’ve faced adversity my whole life and every time it looked like I would lose, I came out on top,” Lanez added in his Thursday statement. “This is nothing but another moment where my back is against the wall and I refuse to stop fighting till I come out victorious.”
