A shooting incident occurred at a high school in a Maryland suburb near Washington, D.C., on Monday, resulting in one student being injured and another taken into custody.
According to a statement from the Rockville City Police Department, officers responded to Thomas Wootton High School around 2:15 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered a student in a hallway who had sustained a gunshot wound.
The injured student was promptly taken to a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
The authorities quickly identified the suspect, who is also a student at the school, and made an arrest shortly thereafter near the school premises.
A press conference scheduled for Monday evening was postponed as officials prioritized reuniting the rest of the students with their families.
County officials said they were aware of the shooting but had no further comment.
“Our thoughts are with the Wootton students, faculty, and their families during this distressing time. Incidents like this are frightening for all involved,” Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich said, according to Montgomery Community Media.
“We are shocked and heartbroken by the disturbing shooting at Wootton High School, said Council President Natali Fani-González. ” … With the police investigation underway, it is paramount that we remain focused on addressing the gun violence in our community. Guns have no place in our schools.”
