An Alabama man faces murder charges after a bonfire gathering on Sunday turned violent, resulting in four individuals being shot. Among the victims, a woman is unlikely to survive her injuries.

Authorities from Jefferson County responded to a secluded area in Pinson where the incident occurred. Among those injured was 18-year-old Kimber Mills. Steven Whitehead, 27, was apprehended by police who suspect the shooting followed both verbal and physical disputes, as reported by WBRC.

Trussville Police Chief Eric Rush revealed that Mills sustained gunshot wounds to both her head and leg. Her sister shared with AL.com that Mills, a high school cheerleader, suffered severe brain swelling. If she survives, she would remain on life support indefinitely.

“We have placed a DNR because we don’t want to prolong her suffering. There’s no surgery that could offer her a meaningful life,” the sister stated, mentioning that doctors have given Mills only a few days to live.

Mills’ sister asserted that Whitehead was an uninvited guest at the bonfire. Mills and her friends were unfamiliar with him. Allegedly, Whitehead attempted to engage one of Mills’ friends with a drink, prompting the friend to notify her boyfriend. A major altercation reportedly erupted, preceding the gunfire.

“Kimber was caught in the crossfire,” Mills’ sister told AL.com.

The three other shooting victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Whitehead has been charged with murder as Mills has been deemed brain dead. He remains jailed without bond.

Additional charges are pending.
