In Wyoming, a man has been formally charged in connection with the tragic death of his girlfriend’s 10-month-old daughter, an incident that occurred a year ago.
John Haney, aged 41, is facing serious accusations including first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse. This development was announced by the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office in a statement released on Friday. Authorities have indicated that no more details will be disclosed until the case advances to district court proceedings.
According to Cap City News, an autopsy performed on the young victim revealed that she died due to asphyxiation. This information was backed by a detective’s affidavit, with the autopsy results being finalized in December.
The affidavit outlines that Haney made a distress call to 911 on March 26, 2025, reporting that the infant was unresponsive. Upon arrival, first responders noted that the child’s limbs were already cold to the touch. Despite being rushed to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, she was pronounced dead approximately an hour and a half later.
Medical examinations, including X-rays, uncovered fractures in both legs and one arm of the girl. These injuries were deemed “highly concerning” by doctors, raising strong suspicions of child abuse.
When interviewed by detectives, Haney said the girl had been fussy when he put her down for a nap. He said he was in the bathroom for about 10 minutes before coming out and finding her unresponsive.
The home had motion activation security cameras on the inside and outside. Detectives served a warrant on the security company for the video and found that two clips on that day had been deleted and could not be recovered.
Surviving footage from that day showed Haney standing in the bathroom doorway before the video cuts off. No footage showed him leaving the bathroom.
But about 30 minutes before Haney placed the 911 call, a dog walked through the living room and activated the camera, which recorded a sound investigators “believed to be a scream from” the child, the affidavit said.
Haney was given a $1 million bond.
