A New Jersey man faces serious charges after his girlfriend was discovered dead in an abandoned vehicle in Pennsylvania. The grim discovery was made on Sunday, prompting a swift investigation.
Lamont Truitt, aged 36, has been formally accused of first-degree murder in connection with the case. In addition, he faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, carjacking, two counts of weapon possession for unlawful purposes, illegal possession of a handgun, and being a person prohibited from possessing firearms. These charges were detailed by the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office in an official statement.
The troubling sequence of events began around 6 a.m. Sunday when a ShotSpotter, a gunshot detection system, alerted Trenton police to gunfire. Concurrently, 911 operators received calls reporting a woman had been shot. Officers arrived on the scene to find a 25-year-old woman suffering from a gunshot wound to her leg, and she was promptly taken to the hospital for treatment.
Shortly after, another 911 call reported that a woman had been shot multiple times by a man who fled the scene in a silver, four-door vehicle. However, police could not immediately locate this second victim.
Investigators later uncovered that the second victim was 32-year-old Alyssia Murphy, who had been in a car with the 25-year-old woman. The situation escalated when Murphy’s boyfriend, Truitt, allegedly approached and began a heated argument with Murphy, leading to the tragic events that followed.
“He then pulled a handgun and fired multiple times,” the prosecutor’s office said. “The 25-year-old woman was able to exit the vehicle. Truitt then entered the Camry and drove away.”
About two hours later, police across the Delaware River in Pennsylvania found Murphy’s body in the Camry, which had been abandoned near the Delaware Canal in Lower Makefield Township.
At some point, Truitt turned himself in to Trenton Police and was charged with Murphy’s murder.
