A young man from California, aged 25, has been formally accused of murdering his elderly neighbor, who was 83 years old.
The victim’s name remains undisclosed following her family’s request, but authorities have identified the alleged perpetrator as Blake Harrison Turner. Turner resided directly across from the victim in the Canyon Club Apartments, as reported by KGTV.
According to the Oceanside police, officers responded to an emergency call around 6 p.m. on Friday regarding an “unresponsive female.” Upon arrival, they determined the situation to be a homicide and soon identified Turner as the suspect, later releasing his name to the public.
Turner was taken into custody on Monday afternoon.
A neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, shared with KGTV that Turner and the victim seemed to share a friendly relationship.
Friends of the victim said she was a long-time advocate for animals and a volunteer for the San Diego Humane Society, which said in a statement it was “heartbroken” by the news.
“She was an integral part of our volunteer program at the Oceanside Campus, and we know she would want to be remembered for her extraordinary dedication to the animals in our care,” the organization said.
Detectives are calling this an isolated incident. Residents in the apartment complex said this tragedy doesn’t define the neighborhood.
Turner is charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bail, jail records show. He is expected to be arraigned Wednesday morning.
