New information has come to light in the troubling case of a 21-year-old University of Kentucky student and cheerleader, who is accused of concealing her newborn in the closet of her campus apartment.

The case involving Laken Snelling is progressing to a grand jury, which is anticipated to review the evidence by late January. The jury will likely be asked to consider indicting Snelling on the three charges she initially denied, with the possibility of additional charges such as murder or manslaughter, depending on the results of the newborn’s autopsy.

Snelling’s arrest followed the discovery of her deceased infant in a trash bag within the closet. The autopsy has only added to the perplexity, as it failed to provide conclusive results regarding the cause of death. Prior to this discovery, Snelling had shared photos showing her pregnancy.

Authorities claim that Snelling secretly gave birth, wrapped the infant in a towel, placed him inside a trash bag, and then left him in her closet.

According to the arrest report, Lexington police responded to a call on Park Avenue concerning an unresponsive infant last Wednesday. Upon arrival, they discovered the baby’s body in a closet, wrapped in a towel and encased in a black trash bag.

The UK cheerleader is now charged with abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence, and concealing the birth of an infant.

Court records show Snelling took selfies during the birth.
