Authorities in North Carolina have apprehended the mother of twin teenagers following the tragic discovery of one of the children deceased, likely due to neglect, at their residence in High Point.

On Thursday, High Point law enforcement took 44-year-old Kymberli Bowden into custody. This comes after her 13-year-old daughter was found dead at their East Farris Avenue home on October 13. According to Fox 8, the girl’s twin brother was present at the scene and was unharmed.

Reports from WXII 12 revealed that the police encountered the residence in extremely poor condition, with refuse and decaying food scattered throughout. The warrant indicated that Bowden had “failed to provide adequate food and medical care,” which allegedly played a role in her daughter’s demise.

Bowden made a virtual court appearance from jail on Friday. During the session, Judge Caroline Tomlinson-Pemberton reviewed the charges against her.

Fox 8 detailed that Bowden faces two class H felony charges: neglect and child abuse resulting in bodily injury, each carrying a potential maximum sentence of 88 months. Additionally, she is charged with failing to report the death of a child, a class H felony with a maximum sentence of 39 months.

The prosecutor addressed the state of Bowden’s home.

“The conditions of the house were unsanitary,” the prosecutor said. “Officers also noticed inside of the residence that there was a gas stove, and it appeared that there was a danger … that residence was actually causing some type of toxication from the gas stove, but it wasn’t properly lit.”

The prosecutor highlighted that Bowden wasn’t only the children’s mother, but also a certified nursing assistant who was required to know how to provide care. “She was being provided money for that particular role.”

Courts are still waiting on the official autopsy results.

Bowden’s bond was set at $1 million. She has obtained a public defender, according to Fox 8.
