Authorities are currently investigating the tragic death of a professor from Middle Tennessee State University, who was discovered shot to death on a roadway in Dekalb County early Thursday morning.

The Dekalb County District Attorney’s Office reported that deputies arrived at the scene to find a “loaded and cocked handgun” near the body of 41-year-old Ashleigh E. McKinzie. Additionally, they found another firearm resting on the hood of a truck belonging to 27-year-old Todd C. Stanton, who remained at the location and is cooperating with law enforcement. More details were shared by the District Attorney’s Office.

District Attorney Bryant C. Dunaway confirmed that the firearm found beside McKinzie belonged to her, while the gun on Stanton’s vehicle was his. Dunaway has requested the involvement of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to assist with the case.

The shooting occurred on State Route 56, in proximity to Center Hill Lake, a place known for its recreational appeal.

At this time, additional details have not been released, and no charges have been filed as the investigation progresses.

McKinzie was an associate professor of sociology at the Murfreesboro school and had been at her job since 2017, the school’s student newspaper reported. The school issued a statement of sympathy and reminded students “who may need support” of the school’s counseling services. Employee assistance is also available for faculty and staff, the school said.
