In a disturbing incident in Florida, a man is accused of attempting to murder his wife by dousing her with gasoline and then setting their home ablaze, authorities have reported. This violent act allegedly followed her request for a divorce. The man, identified as 51-year-old Alfonza Green, reportedly declared, “If I die, we both gonna die,” while his wife was innocently engaged with her phone, scrolling through Facebook from her bed.

Green faces serious charges including attempted first-degree murder and arson. The dramatic events unfolded in Ocala on November 30, as detailed in a probable cause affidavit. When Marion County sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene, they found Green suffering from burn injuries amid neighbors’ accounts that he had set himself on fire.

According to the victim, she was unsuspectingly sitting on her bed when Green emerged from the shower and dressed. Initially, she assumed he was preparing to leave, but was startled by the sensation of something cold being poured on her. Confused, she questioned Green’s actions, asking, “What the hell is that? What are you doing?”

In a chilling response, Green allegedly threatened, “If I die, we both gonna die together. We both gonna die today. We both gonna die. If I have to die…if I go, you gonna go with me because we married.”

Panic-stricken, the victim attempted to flee the room, pleading with Green, “Don’t do this! What are you doing? Please don’t do this!” It was then that she realized the liquid saturating her was gasoline. The affidavit reveals that Green then attempted to ignite the lighter to set her on fire, subsequently setting himself on fire as well. He reportedly tried to trap her in the room, apparently with the intention of them perishing in the flames together, as described by the deputies.

Post-Miranda, Green told detectives he and his wife got into an argument and she told him she no longer wanted to be married to him. He said he poured gas on his bed because he was “tired of living.” Green claimed the victim left the room before he set the bed on fire. He then “caught on fire,” deputies wrote. The defendant denied pouring gas on his wife, per the affidavit.

There were six other people in the home at the time of the fire, including the victim’s 11-year-old grandson. They were not injured.

Green was arrested Tuesday and taken to the Marion County Jail, where he remains without bond.
